Last year we celebrated the fortieth anniversary of the first Rolex Middle Sea Race with a record fleet of seventy-seven yachts. No new course record was set, as in 2007, but the front of the fleet laid on an exciting race fighting tooth and nail to the last. The bulk of the fleet encountered three days of light winds followed by two days of strong winds, which allowed one of the smaller boats in the fleet the chance to claim top honours.
I have no doubt that this year will be no exception in the long history of the race. It will involve close racing, with tussles for Line Honours and the Overall trophy being won by those who persevere in the face of whatever the weather throws at the fleet. All competitors will be given a warm welcome when they arrive in Malta and a rousing send off from the start of the race. And, at the end, everyone who completes the course will return home awash with tales of their experience that - we hope - will inspire others to participate in the future.
Aside from the highest number of participants, we also achieved a record number of participating nations with yachts from twenty different nationalities. Malta has long been the crossroads of the Mediterranean and this spread of international crews confirms that status. It is also reassuring for the Royal Malta Yacht Club to know that its crown jewel is indeed highly regarded throughout the offshore yacht racing community.
It is too far off to speculate whether we will break more records in 2009 or if conditions will favour the front or back of the fleet. One thing is definite. After many years of uncertainty, the Royal Malta Yacht Club will be proudly displaying its new, permanent home at Ta' Xbiex. This is a truly momentous year for the RMYC. And, whilst there are sure to be a few tears shed by those that felt at home at Fort Manoel, both the Club and the Rolex Middle Sea Race stand at the dawn of a new era.
